Wednesday and Thursday 1/9-1/10
Cover expectations for controlling idea and outline
Controlling idea- More like a topic sentence since your argument has already been decided for you. It will guide your paper. It is one sentence only that goes at the end of your introduction (last sentence). Example question: Analyze why sophomore year is more difficult than freshman year. Example controlling idea: "Because of increased independence, more preparation for college, and job responsibilities, sophomore year is widely viewed as more challenging than freshman year."
Outlining- Outline guide (p. 33 in TKP) is due Friday. It doesn't need to be in complete sentences, but not bullets either. It needs to be apparent how the ideas connect to one another. Sentence outlines are due Monday (typed, MLA). You need to have complete citations for the sentence outline. You can use the following resources: Write-on handbook (p. 19) or Witteman's "History Outline-pagination" template (Q drive under "Witteman" folder).
Class had the rest of the time in the LMC to research. You'll need historical information to explain your "buckets" and you'll need personal stories to illustrate each "bucket". Do not forget to write down source information (author, title, publisher, city, copyright, page number, website, etc.) as you take notes- you'll need that for parenthetical notation and your works cited.
